Tributes are pouring in over the sad news of AKA’s passing. Real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, the legendary rapper reportedly passed aged 35 in Durban.
Affectionately known as Supamega to his magnitudes of fans, AKA had the distinction of being one of the best-selling rappers of all time in Africa. His award-winning discography contains such critically lauded albums as Altar Ego, Touch My Blood, Be Careful What You Wish For, and Bhovamania.
It is understood the ‘Fela in Versace’ hitmaker was hard at work on his next studio album. Entitled MASS COUNTRY, the project has already spawned the hits ‘Lemons (Lemonade)’ with Nasty C and ‘Paradise’.
In his blockbuster career, the hit Megatron produced such street anthems as ‘Fela in Versace’, ‘All Eyes On Me’, ‘The World is Yours’, ‘Baddest’, ‘Don’t Forget to Pray’, and many others.
Considered one the best MCs to come out of South Africa, AKA is also lauded for his pioneering contributions in elevating SA hip hop to mainstream local and global success.
The Forbes family released a statement on Saturday.
“To us, Kieran Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, most importantly father to his daughter Kairo. To many, he was AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA, and many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return.
The family continued to ask for “compassion, space, and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days. We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord.”
